Homeschool Rescue {A Review of an Online Course for Mamas}

Ahhhhh.  In my ideal little plan for the day, I  was meant to be relaxing and writing this review of
Homeschool Rescue by Heather Aliano from Only Passionate Curiosity while my children read or prayed themselves to sleep and I had some quiet time after a fulfilling homeschool day.  Instead, even though our day was a positive one, I have barely been able to collect my thoughts for this review while dealing with disciplining, consoling, and parenting children to bed.

Yep.  Tonight is proving to be "one of those nights" when my children's choices are less than best, and, therefore, I have to adapt.

Where I Was When I Started Homeschool Rescue?

Only Passionate Curiosity Homeschool Rescue

It was during a series of draining days (like this night is proving to be!) that I decided I could use the opportunity to breathe new life into my homeschool with Heather's e-course.  For, even though I often say I would not change my husband and my decision to homeschool for anything, I just as often realize that I need to change - or at least tweak, refresh or reset - our approach to homeschooling regularly if my family is to come anywhere close to our goal of training truly happy hearts.  For, without question, starting our homeschool journey was a lot easier than living it day to day has been and  - wow! - sometimes it certainly does take EFFORT to maintain even a modicum of happiness

So many things can step into to set homeschoolers off course, right?  In the past four or five months for my family, such things have included my mother-in-law's passing, a surgery for my husband, the necessity of another impending surgery for one of our children, bouts of sickness, car trouble, over-scheduling, pre-teen hormones and more. Oh, plus the "usual" of life with beautiful, creative, active children that also challenge me daily with their unique learning and thinking differences... You know - just life as it rolls, and life as it sometimes rolls right over you and leaves you feeling so battered and bruised that you forget what a blessing it all is and start letting doubt, distress, stress, and burnout get the best of you, instead of embracing the trust, gratitude, and grace that is really yours to carry on with.

So, anyway, that's where I was when I decided it was time to hit the reset button by taking advantage of Heather's 60-day
e-course that promises practical lessons - and oodles of encouragement - to get homeschooling back on track!

What Has the "Rescue" Been Like?
Only Passionate Curiosity Homeschool Rescue

As soon as I started the e-course, I appreciated it.  The website the e-course is delivered from is clear, clean, organized and easy to navigate.  Heather's approach is one of encouragement, yet challenge.  She is a homeschool mama who has been in the trenches, too, so she understands just how discouraged one can be and just how necessary it is to both BREATHE and WORK to make things better.  Sometimes, you let go.  Sometimes you dig in.  Always, you take an honest look at yourself, your kids, and your homeschool and confront challenges while embracing grace - and, if you need to, you pause to get professional help if circumstances demand.

Heather also gets that time is often one of the biggest hurdles or homeschoolers, so, although she has organized the e-course to be completed in 60 days, she understands that it may take some mamas longer.  Thus, while she encourages all to make time to watch, learn, reflect, and implement ideas from each of the courses five modules in order to effect positive and lasting change, she lets you know it is okay to go at your own pace - pausing to get a handle on some of the module's suggestions and work at times, or putting some work aside to move on with other portions of the course, before circling back around.

For me, the need to do both these things came up early on in the course.

During Module 1, I was asked to do some homework with my husband which, well, was not well-timed.  I tried to complete the exercises together, but it was leading to more stress than "rescue" help to do so.

I ended up mentioning this on the Facebook Community and immediately got feedback from other moms - including Heather - offering support and encouragement, plus a "pass" to tweak the "work" of the assignment to a way that worked for my then-present situation.

A bit further along in the course, the whole organizing your home thing brought me to a stand still.  For, my home has been rather a large stumbling block for me and mine for quite some time.  I am making minute progress with it, but if I paused to really declutter it all,  well, there'd be no time to homeschool.  In response to someone's Facebook pot about delcuttering, I mentioned how the decluttering part o the course had me a bit "stuck" and Heather responded:
"Don't get stuck in the rabbit hole! ) If it's not something you want/can tackle right now, make a note to do it later and move on. Is it possible to "outsource" some of the decluttering to any of your kids? Can you assign a small portion of the work to do to them each week? (clean a drawer, organize a shelf ... that sort of thing?)"

Our conversation progressed some from there and left me thinking about how I could continue small progress with the clutter and get moving on the course again.  I appreciated at this point - and others - how the e-course and Facebook community, when paired together offer more than any book or static course could on its own.

You get all the benefit of having prerecorded video and audio, downloadable/printable transcripts, exercises, and extras and  an interactive forum to ask questions, get personalized suggestions,a and, okay, just vent a little.  That all makes
Homeschool Rescue aces for me.  Access anytime.  Multi-modal offerings (audio, video, online print and paper printables).  Opportunities to work through things on your own or with the support and input of others, including the course's creator.  That just works!!

What also works is that change happens even before the course is completed - or so it is happening for me.

I actually had my oldest fill out one of the homework assignments meant for my husband and me, and have been using that to help us communicate and plan our summer learning experiences forward.

Another assignment made me realize that both my husband and I weigh practical life skills over many other typical "by the tie my child graduates" skills and knowledge.  This translated, for me, into a new approach to - of all things - grocery shopping with my children.  Just this past week, I had my longest, but most peaceful grocery shopping experience with them in ages.  Not a single one of them bickered or begged for items in the store as they all had portions of our grocery budget to plan and purchase items of their choice for meals and snacks they'd be responsible for this week and - woah - my oldest (who  is the hardest one to get to bed and the latest riser) asked me to wake him at 7:30 tomorrow so he can make his breakfast before our day's commitments start.

This personal-to-our-family-fruit came from seeds planted by reflections from the e-course.  Your fruit, no doubt, will be different should you take the course, but, undoubtedly, there will be fruit!

Who Would I Recommend This E-Course to?

Only Passionate Curiosity Homeschool Rescue

If you've been homeschooling a year, a decade, or more, and seek a structured approach that will guide you though taking an honest, introspective look at your homeschooling in order to make lasting changes to improve it, I daresay the
Homeschool Rescue e-course has something for you.  Between the five modules that are currently offered in the course, almost every aspect of homeschooling - and how to go about refreshing your experience with it - is touched upon.

Only Passionate Curiosity Homeschool Rescue

The e-course will get you reflecting on how best to troubleshoot your homeschool and set your children up for success.  It will offer you tools for time management and organization.  You'll find practical ideas for planning and implementing curriculum for children of all ages, including older students.  And, most importantly, you will be encouraged to let go of guilt, seek balance, and allow GRACE to enter into your homeschool efforts.

Sure, you may find some points where you become uncomfortable as you take an honest look at where you're at and why, and you might even struggle through some steps towards improvement.  You might also find that Heather's structured approach, say to curriculum planning, does not 100% mesh with your own style (as is the case for me), but you will also likely realize that some areas of your homeschool are not in need of as much of a reset as you might have thought and that the parts that are in need can be dealt with one step at a time as you put into practice what the course presents.

If my experience with
Homeschool Rescue is anything to go by, you will find community as you reflect and (re)gain confidence, making positive progress towards a more organized, purposeful homeschool.

"Remind Me Again, What's Involved.  I'm a Busy, Burnt-Out Mama"

Homeschool Rescue is and e-course delivered in 5 modules that contain 20+ short video segments in total. There are audio options or the segments, too, as well as easy-to-download transcripts in case you rpefer to read or review ideas in print.

Each module also includes helpful printable "homework" exercises and reflections and resource links.  (Mind you, when I say "homework" it is not the kind of homework that makes you sweat and groan.  It's the kind that makes you think, reflect, and create action plans.)  Plus, there is ongoing support from other homeschool parents in a private Facebook community, and there is bonus content - like Mom Planners, a Homeschool Student Accountability Pack, and a Teen Academic Planner -  that is added to regularly.

This means that no matter what kind of week you're having, you can access and benefit from one aspect of the e-course or another - a video playing when you do chores, a printable tucked into your go-bag to take out while you wait for an appointment, a quick plea for help or understanding in the Facebook group...  I speak from experience, the multi-modal way the e-course is delivered makes it work under multiple circumstances.

Oh, and one of the best parts, as I mentioned earlier, is that Heather gets how intentions and reality don't always match up.  So, even though the course is designed to be a 60 day one, she offers lifetime access to its 20 +video lessons and encourages those who need to (like me!) to just breathe and take the course at a pace that works with real life!

The Most Well-Planned Paper-Based Planner I've Seen in Ages! {An Ultimate Homeschool Planner Review}

{Note:  This post contains affiliate links to a favorite educational products provider of ours: Apologia Educational Ministries, from whom we received The Ultimate Homeschool Planner for review. Read full disclosure here.}

"Organization" and "Martianne" are simply not synonymous, no matter how much I wish they were.  Thus, I am always looking for tools to motivate me towards better order in my family's home, homeschool, and more.  So, when a favorite homeschool resource provider
Apologia Educational Ministries offered the chance for me to review The Ultimate Homeschool Planner, I took it!

More than Your Average Planner

When Debra Bell designed The Ultimate Homeschool Planner, she was most certainly thorough!  Using the mission "count your blessings, encourage independence, record your progress" she not only included all the typical things you'd find in a homeschool planner, but she also included some mental food and inspiration!

Indeed, if you had asked me before I received
The Ultimate Homeschool Planner if I'd ever underline and jot down margin notes as I read text in a planner, I would have laughed at you.  Noteworthy text in a planner?  Ha!

Or, ah ha! As they case may be with the
The Ultimate Homeschool Planner.  For, as I read the welcome note from Debra Bell and Zan Tyler in my copy of he 264-page planner, I already found myself bracketing things and writing little notes to myself.

Then, as I read through the 12 pages of the User Guide, which are replete with helpful true-to-life examples of how to best put the pages of the planner into use, I continued to underline and make margin notes.  The same thing happened again as I went through the six pages of Teaching Tips towards the end of the planner.

Wow!  I did not know I would be finding inspiration, encouragement and tips within the pages of the planner, but I did!

Flexible Planning Sheets

Before, after and between its succinct, but noteworthy welcome note, User's Guide and Tips, The Ultimate Homeschool Planner contains planner contains pages and pages of helpful, flexible planning sheet.  These include:

  • two page-at-a-glance two-year dated calendars
  • a page to write you personal information including school year, name, address, phone number, and students
  • a two-page undated one-year planning grid
  • two pages of student goal setting forms, with room for academic and character goals for six students (or three students, two parents, and a family-as-a-whole as the case was here)
  • a four-page pre-planning guide in which to list family priorities and resources
  • 12 blank monthly planning pages
  • a full year's worth of weekly planner pages with spaces for you "Bible Plan", "Battle Plan", "Prayers", "Hosptiality/Outreach", "Acheivements" "Momeorable Moments", "Evidences of Grace", "Notes", "Supplies", "Appointments", and, of course, lessons activities
  • two pages for grade keeping
  • three pages for reading lists
  • three pages for recording field trips and outside activities
  • a high school planning guide page
  • two year-end review pages
  • a page for notes

There is also a two-page bibliography for those who seek more inspiration after reading all the fabulous inspirational quotes that are interwoven in the pages of each section of the planner.  And - handy-handy-handy - on the insides of The Ultimate Homeschool Planner's soft, spiral-bound cover are file pocket flaps so you can slip papers in.

Talk about a well-planned planner!  This one sure is.

Finding My Groove with the Planner's Inspiration

Anyone looking at the cover of my copy of The Ultimate Homeschool Planner can quickly recognize that this is not a resource that stays tucked away on a shelf untouched by me more than once or twice a day.  The nicks and scratches in the surprisingly durable soft-cover are testimony to the fact that the planner makes rounds with us to different rooms in the house as well as out-and-about.

The first trip the planner took with me was to a hotel where we went on a one-night family getaway this fall in honor of our youngest's entry into his kindergarten year.  (Upon entering his or her kindergarten year in our home, each child gets to choose something to ride or somewhere to go instead of riding the big yellow bus and going to a school building.  My youngest requested a hotel stay and, since we found a super deal on one, we went for it!)

I thought there was not more fitting place to begin using the planner to plan the year than at our kindergarten-celebration location.  So, as the kids' enjoyed some special screentime in the room and splashtime in the pool, I sat on the deck of our room overlooking a river and perused the planner.  That was when I began underlining things and writing notes prior to filling in the one-year planning grid and some other planning pages.

Later, as I used the planner, I found the first double-page spread for each week absolutely fabulous!  I love the quotes on the pages and the way the pages remind me to focus on faith, hospitality, memorable moments, achievements, and evidences of grace.  The constant reminder to pray, serve, give thanks, note good, etc. is much appreciated by me.

The next two pages of each weekly planner page took me a bit to decide how best to use.  They offer 6 x 6 grids to use any way one wishes.  Most, I assume, would use these to plan activities for up to six children, six days a week, or for six subjects for six children.  However, since I plan activities seven days a week (including choir at Mass, family walks, museum trips, etc. as "school" activities), I wanted another row of boxes if I was going to use the grids as a straight-up weekly planner.  And, since I break our time down into seven segments for planning purposes each day (wake up and early morning time, breakfast time and readings, morning experiences, lunch and readings, afternoon experiences, dinner and intentional time, and wind down/bedtime/reading/listening, I wanted another row of boxes for planning that way, too.  And subjects?  Well, we explore more than six subjects with some regularity.  So, again, the traditional grid did work perfectly for me.

Further, since I like to plan, reflect, and list forward all in one place, I missed having a wide notes space on the weekly pages of the organizer.  That is, until I figured out an adaptation that works for me.

Under the "Week Of", I listed some of my key tasks for the different roles I aim to balance each week - being a woman of prayer, who is a loving partner, a loving parent, a partial provider of finances, and a planner and prepared of eats.  Then, over under "supplies", I listed the areas of our home that needed the most attention, as that is another role I attempt balance in - provider of homekeeping.

Five of the middle six columns then got used to plan my children's S.K.I.L.L. T.I.M.E. + activities.  I used the top three rows for each of my children's language arts categories:

  • Spell and Write Words
  • Keep Reading to Yourself
    Illustrate and Write
  • Listen to Reading
  • Learn and Play with Language Arts Together

Then, I used the bottom three rows to plan their Math and Other activities:

  • Think, Read, and Write About Math, Investigate and Explore Math Concepts,
  • Master Math Together
  • Exercise Math Skills on My Own,
  • Other Activities

The sixth column of the middle grid I used for planning forward notes and tasks.  In the Notes box, I wrote some overarching "true north" goals and priority tasks.  And, in the Appointments, I wrote appointment notes not mentioned elsewhere or continued planning forward notes.

This adaptation seemed to work for me and proves how uniquely one can tailor the pages!  Of course, those with more traditional subjects, schedules, approaches, or what have you, won't necessarily need to tailor anything.  Just fill in names, days, subjects, and go.

Would I Recommend the Planner?

You bet I would recommend
The Ultimate Homeschool Planner
It is such a well-planned planner which offers food-for-thought, tips, encouragement, quotes, and plenty of useful and flexible planning pages.  For those that like pen-and-paper planner, it is the best homeschool planner I have seen.  For those who need a how-to or inspiration about how to plan, it's in there.  For those who wish to take a nugget or two from the how-to's and inspiration, but proceed in their own way, there's room for that, too.  Truly, Apologia Educational Ministries offers an excellent tool for "counting blessings, encouraging independence, and recording progress" with The Ultimate Homeschool Planner!

Get a Free Trial of THE Most Comprehensive Online Planner I Know {A Homeschool Planet Review}

I don't know how life is with you, but with me it is f-u-l-l, FULL!  Almost too full, at times, which reviewing Homeschool Planet by the Homeschool Buyers Co-op has made clear to me.

For, you see, Homeschool Planet (which is offering a FREE 30-day trial!) is much more than a homeschool planner or a basic online calendar, it is an adaptable life planner - a central place to organize home, homeschool, work, volunteer and other pursuits.  For me, it is also a wake up call about how many things I have been failing to organize well.

Indeed, I when I signed up to review Homeschool Planet, I thought it would take me no time at all to transfer our calender and other information over to it and to, once and for all, juggle the balls of life with success.  However, through no fault of Homeschool Planet, I that was not the case.  I simply have a lot to transfer and much of that is buried in physical and e-clutter.  For, as a single, I was a "paper person".  I had a small binder that I carried with me as well as a wall calendar that I wrote "big events" on.  I also had running to-do lists at home and one at work and, occasionally, made color-coded charts and project notebooks, too.  These tools, together, kept me fairly well-organized and successful at work and at home.

Enter marriage, then children.  My old tools no longer worked.  My husband's mental and physical organization styles differed from mine.  Our lives and schedules got more complicated. Our children, as many children do, worked to make the old adage, "life is what happens when you're making other plans" a minute-to-minute reality for us.  The organizational tools that I had come to trust could not keep up with the all the new and different balls that life tossed my way, and, consequently, disorganization became an unfortunate hallmark of this once organized gal.

To combat the developing chaos, I sought more tools - some made by others, some made by me, some online, some offline.  All helpful to a degree, but not to a large enough degree to keep all the balls of life in sync as they soared through the air, with none being dropped, or, worse, smacking me square in the face.

For, okay, I admit it!  I tend to juggle a lot of balls at once.  I overplan.  I get lost in minutia instead of plowing through priorities.  I miss deadlines.  I smile, thinking carpe diem, (or cry, wondering, What have I done?!) as I toss another ball into the air or get distracted running after one that is rolling away.  Yes, I also tend to squeeze just one more activity in my family's lives even when my husband is reminding me there simply isn't room.  And, in doing all this, I negate many of the positive effects of most planners, schedules, calendars, checklists, etc. I have developed or tried.

Whether a tool for just me, one for the family, one for each person in the family, one that is online, one that is offline, one that is you-name-it, prior to
Homeschool Planet, no tool could even come close to helping me keep all the balls I sought to juggle in the air with a smile.  But Homeschool Planet, as I am coming to know it offers something different: hope!  As a flexible, all-in-one planner that is made by homeschoolers and continually updated with user suggestions in mind, Homeschool Planet has the potential to be THE tool to finally get me as organized - or,  God-willing, even more organized - than I have been in ten years!  Better still, is has both online features (which provide ease for input, rescheduling, communicating with others in the family, etc.) and printable options (which appeases my paper-loving inner-luddite) that are all connected and centralized!

To date, I have slowly been wading through physical and e-clutter in my home to centralize information with
Homeschool Planet
while also adding new meetings, to do's, events, tasks, appointments, etc.  Doing the latter is easy-easy!  Homeschool Planet is rather intuitive to use and also has a collection of how-to videos and speedy, helpful customer service should you need it.

And- wow!- does
Homeschool Planet offer a lot of helpful features!  I have not used them all, but I have used enough to offer you a top ten of sorts of reasons this tool offers me hope and might be just what you are looking for to get organized, too:

10 Reasons to Cheer About Homeschool Planet

Homeschool Planet Review

1.  There are different views!

So long as you have an internet connection and a web browser, you can get started with ease and, when you do, you can choose to view (or input) things in Calendar view, Planner view or Resource view.  In these views, you can also select to look at a single day, a week or the month.  So, whether you want to get an overview of all the balls you have to juggle or focus in on a certain one, you can easily do so!

Homeschool Planet Review

2.  It can work for you, your spouse and your children -- individually or together. You can create profiles for yourself, your spouse, each individual child, even the roles you each play (such as Mom-home, Mom-work, Mom-co-op, etc.)  Then, you can view appointments, information, classes, etc. for one, some or all at once.  That means you can focus in on just one person, or even one role of a person, or can see how everyone's wants, needs and commitments are working together.

 3.  Scheduling is simple.

When you want to schedule something, you choose if it;s a class, an event (birthday, etc.), or "everything else".  Then, you choose the day and time (or recurring).  You can also choose who the class, event, or comittment is for and add notes, specific assignments, etc.

Homeschool Planet Review

4.  Rescheduling is but a click away.Life happens and one of the joys of homeschooling is the flexibility to go with it.  In one click, you can reschedule assignments and take a day off.

5.  Communication is key!You can input an email (or a phone number for text if you are not part-luddite like me and lacking a "fancy phone") for each person in order to be send a digest of upcoming commitments and tasks - or even to text grocery lists.  This makes for an easy way to communicate with spouses (and children who are old enough to have emails or text messaging) even when everyone is going in different directions.

6.  There are individual log-ins.

Your spouse or children can access their own lists, assignments, etc. through individual log-ins you create.

Homeschool Planet Review

7.  You can color code!If you (or your husband or kids) are visual, color coding can be key.  Easy options to do so are included.  (Better still, if you choose to print, you can print in black-and-white or color, so you do not have to use color ink if you do not want to, but can if any individual prefers it.)

Homeschool Planet Review

8.  Tracking is easy.

If you need to track attendance, time, or grades for reports or transcripts, it can be done with ease!

9.  Widgets add loads of extra appeal!

Meal planning, shopping lists, Bible verses, inspirational quotes, weather and more are all available on handy sidebar widgets that you can add or delete.

10.  You can go mobile.

If you have multiple mobile devices, you can use a tutorial to create an easy-access icon to access Homeschool Planet from anywhere.

My Bottom Line

Even if you're busy, you need not be bowled over by all the balls you are juggling.   Homeschool Planet, offers features and flexibility that make it a comprehensive, one-stop planning tool that can help keep you and yours on track.  If, like me, you desire to appreciate the abundance of life, but also seek to clearly discern which parts of the plethora each day unfolds with should get priority, give this planner a whirl.  It not only has traditional and convenient calendar features, but it also provides:
