Oh, How My Children Love Heirloom Audio Productions!

I have mentioned before that one of the reasons my children ask me to stay on as a part of the Schoolhouse Review Crew is because we love to review new audiodramas by
Heirloom Audio Productions.  Thus, it came as no surprise to me that, when an envelope with our review copy of The Cat of Bubastes came in, my children literally leapt with excitement!

My daughter was the one who opened the package and - grrr- my camera settings were not set to automatic when she did so.  Thus, I was unable to capture the moment she saw the CD clearly.

Still, as blurry and bad a the picture of her discovering what was inside the envelope may be, I am sharing it, for, despite the quality of the photo, I think my daughter's delight in finding
The Cat of Bubastes is clear!

Her brothers were just as excited!  We had been homebound on "quarantine" for a while when the CD came in, so instead of waiting until our next car ride to listen to it, we immediately popped it in to listen to at home.  The next two hours flew by.  We all became totally immersed in the story!

What is the Cat of Bubastes about?

Heirloom Audio Productions ~Cat of Bubastes

The Cat of Bubastes
is a two-hour audiodrama adapted from G.A. Henty's novel of the same name.  In the story, there is a young man, Amuba, who grew up a prince, but was taken to Egypt as a slave after his people were conquered.  He and his companion Jethro, who is his protector and fellow captured slave, come under the ownership of Ameres, an Egyptian high priest who is also hungry for spiritual truth.

Ameres treats Amuba and Jethro with respect, despite their status as slaves in his household, and Amuba and Jethro become his faithful servants.  They befriend Ameres' son Chebron and become more and more familiar with Egyptina life and culture - including the Egyptian's view of cats as sacred.

Amuba and Jethro also befriend Israelites and learn about the one true God.

As the story unfolds, an honored cat is killed and, thus, the young men have to flee Egypt.  They head to Amuba's homeland where he fights to reclaim his throne.

Throughout the story, history and faith come alive with humor and excitement.  A star-studded cast, top-notch score,  high-quality sound affects, and well-written script work together to capture imaginations.

Extras! Extras!  We always enjoy the extras!

Heirloom Audio Productions ~Cat of Bubastes

Along with our review copy of a physical 2-cd set of The Cat of Bubastes, we also received access to a host of online extras.  These extras add an extra dose of learning and convenience to Heirloom Audio Productions. The extras included:

  • an MP3 of the production so if our CD's become scratched, we can still listen to the audiodrama on our computer
  • a Cat of Bubastes E-book, which is long and comes in full-color, so is not something I woud print, but is something I am glad to have so if we ever get an e-reader device that is easy on our eyes, we can read it.  (We do not like to read long things on our computer.)
  • an Official MP3 Soundtrack, which is fun to play to ignite imaginations for dramatic play, etc.
  • a printable cast poster, which is not anything we are into, but which could be a boon for others
  • an  inspirational verse poster that offers a Scripture verse which illustrates what the main character learns about the character of God
  • access to Live the Adventure Website, which we like to peek at sometimes
  • a Study and Discussion Guide that comes as a 47 page PDF, perfect for helping your family dig a little deeper into the story.  This guide is well-formated, in full color, and contains a recipe, historical notes, two Bible studies and study materials for each section of the story.  It can be used for informal discussions (as my family uses it) or for in-depth study and written answers.  Fore each section of the story, the Guide contains three sections:

    • Listening Well, which are basic comprehension questions
    • Thinking Further, which are questions that require drawing conclusions or further research
    • The Defining Word, which lists vocabulary words

The extras also included our favorite: a behind-the-scenes documentary video!

All three of my children LOVE watching such documentaries by Heirloom Audio Productions, because they like to witness what goes into making the audiodramas, to see how the actors look, etc.

As we watched the video for
The Cat of Bubastes, the children remained riveted to our computer screen  - laughing, bouncing out of their seats at times, talking back (in good ways!) to the screen and with one another about what they were watching.  I think I had as much fun watching them watch the video as I did simply viewing the video alongside them.

You can get a taste of the documentary in the video below.

What do the children have to say?

Heirloom Audio Productions ~Cat of Bubastes

All three of my children (not to mention my husband and I!) thoroughly enjoy Heirloom Audio Productions and found The Cat of Bubastes to be a little different than the other CD's we've listened to so far, but still, just as entertaining and educational!  For the differences lay in the plot line, not in the quality of the Christian radio theater production.

Indeed, the quality of
The Cat of Bubastes was right in line with the top-notch work by Heirloom Audio Productions that we have come to know and loveDrama.  Humor.  Faith.  Living history.  Music.  Theater.  It's all in there!

My oldest, ten, has this to say:
The Cat of Bubastes was different than the other Heirloom Audio Productions CD's, because the main character's mom AND dad were dead  and the character does not have a special thing that his dad gave him.  It also takes place before Christ lived.

I wondered how they would have a Christian message in it.  They did, though.  I won't say how, because I don't want to ruin the story.

Parts of The Cat of Bubastes are really funny.  For example, once, when a character was going to Egypt, the guards said, "You smell like camels."  Another time, a guy was wearing a dye and it had camel urine in it.

I always like the background videos for Heirloom Audio Productions, too, because I like to see who is behind the characters.  In the video for this one, I thought it was funny when they were trying to get the voices right, because they kept adding r's to words because of their accents (usually the characters are from the United Kingdom, but this time they were not.)

I did not like this story as much as
In Freedom's Cause and The Dragon and the Raven, but I still liked it.  I think other people will, too.

His little brother, my six-year-old, said:

I liked that there was no romance in this one!  And I liked the WHOLE THING!

A funny part was when they said, "Never mind," and there was camel urine.

There was nothing too violent, but there was excitement when he was in the maze and being chased.  The whole thing was history.

The best part was the very end, but I cannot tell why.  It would give it away.

I think everyone should listen to this CD, because it has no romance and it's awesome.  It's Egypt.  It's history.  It's fun.

Their sister, nine, exclaimed:

It was funny! I really liked when one character said, "I don't even know what I am wearing." And the other guy said, "What is it?" And the guy told him, "It's something put in camel urine."  That's funny and gross.
I also like that there's no romance.  In all the other stories, like "the girl up in the tree", the characters married, but this time... I cannot say or I'll spoil it.
I liked that it involved the Israelites. I thought that was funny, because we've been learning about them in our history and faith studies.  This story helped me picture the times a little better.
I liked this story A LOT.  It is one of my favorites, along with Under Drake's Flag and In Freedom's Cause.  It's in my top three.  Then, I like  Beric the Briton and the Dragon and the Raven.  Then, With Lee in Virginia.  I like them all!  I think other people will, too.  I hope we get another!  This is one of the reasons we ask our Mommy to review.
Oh, and I liked the video.  It was funny how the guy ate paper when he was pretending to be an animal .  Instead of eating grass, he ate paper and put his hands on the side of his head like ears or antlers.  Sometimes the videos are funnier than the CD's.  They also help you get a feel for what it is like to make a CD.

As you can tell, we remain HUGE FANS of
Heirloom Audio Productions and are thrilled to have added The Cat of Bubastes to our collection.  We truly listen to these CD's again and again and again!

No-Nonsense Phonics Help

With a developing reader and a struggling reader in our home, I am always on the look out for strong phonics resources such as the Ultimate Phonics Reading Program from Spencer Learning, which we were given an opportunity to review.

I like having a number of phonics resources on hand so we can keep moving forward - or at least not slip back - no matter what our day-to-day calendar looks like or what moods the kids may be in.

Some days resources we can use on the go are most helpful.  Other days, things we can sit down with at home are welcome.  Likewise, some days, I need something that one or two children can work on while Mom focuses 1:1 with another child, and other days I like something I can work on 1:1, 1:2, or  even 1:3 with my children.

I also find that having more than one resource for phonics is helpful in keeping frustration levels at bay.  For my developing reader, in particular, focused reading studies can be challenging.  Some days, she simply "hits a wall" and we have to back off.  Then, the next day when we pick up, if I use the same resource, sometimes she remains "mentally blocked", so I find approaching similar content with varied resources helps her stay open to learning.  I also find that the resources that work best for us are ones that we can use for 2 minutes or 20 minutes in a sitting, just picking up wherever we left off the last time.

The Ultimate Phonics Reading Program, then, became a welcome addition to our phonics resource repertoire.  It offered us an easy, effective, no-nonsense, approach to developing phonics skills that could be utilized for a few minutes on busy or "bad" days or for longer on days when we had more time to sit down with our computer and were blessed with happy, open-to-learning attitudes.  (And, honestly, on days when attitudes plummeted, it helped, too, because I could work on stamina by saying, let's just try to get through this ONE portion and, then, when success was met - which it often was - sometimes my child was good to go for another portion.)

What is the Ultimate Phonics Reading Program?

Perhaps the best way to begin describing what the Ultimate Phonics Reading Program is is to describe what it is not (and, therefore, what it is):

  • It is not an online program, but rather one you download to your computer.  That means your children can use it easily while you have the comfort of knowing that they are not online.

  • It is not something that only works with one child.  Rather, once downloaded, you can use the program with all your children.  In fact, the software comes with a license that allows you to download it onto any device in your home and use it with anyone in your home accessing it from any device it is on.  (Devices must be running Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP; or for Macs, OSX 10.5.8 or higher.)

  • It is not a program with bells, whistles, silly sounds, cartoon figures, etc. It is straight-forward without visual clutter. You see words, you hear words, you sound words out, you read them in isolation, and you read them in sentences.  It is no-frills, direct teaching of all phonics patterns.

  • It is not for beginners only.  It contains 262 progressive lessons that can be used for beginning readers through adults.
  • It is not overwhelming. Although 7,000 pages of material divided into 262 lessons (which is what the program has) sounds HUGE, it is not.  Lessons are set up in the same format with an easy to navigate menu.  There are six types of pages (pattern, idea, word list, word, sight word and sentence pages) organized into four parts per lesson (pattern or idea page, a set of word list pages, a set of word pages, and a set of sentence pages) which move forward in a logical progression.

  • It is not computer-only.  There is an option to print lesson materials, so children (and adults who need reading help) can Children (and adults who need to) can, therefore learn all of the phonetic sounds and rules onscreen or off.
  • It is not something that will become outdated.  Updates for the program are FREE!

For more information about the program, watch this video to get a feel for the program and read the easy-to-understand overview on the website. :

Who is the program for?

The Ultimate Phonics Reading Program
for:
  • Beginning Readers
  • Struggling Readers
  • People with Dyslexia
  • ESL/ELLStudents
  • Those studying Adult Literacy
  • Students in Middle School and High School hat need extra phonics help

Because the program is designed to be streamlined, clutter-free of distractions, and focused wholly on the task of learning phonics and reading, it can really be used across ages.

It's no-frills, but are there any extras?

You can find some helpful resources on the
Ultimate Phonics Reading Program, such as:
  • Free Word Lists
  • an Ultimate Phonics Reading Test

  • Scope and Sequence
  • a Tracking Sheet
  • a User's Guide

These can be used in conjunction with the actual Ultimate Phonics Reading Program, which includes over 4, 400 words and 2,100 sentences that progress from basic to advanced phonics in a complete systematic way.  This is a huge amount of decodable material that requires no special training to use a a supplement or a main program.  A sound/voice feature is also included so students can use the program independently.

How did we use the program?

We've fallen into a pattern with my developing reader and my struggling reader lately, where 5-6 days a week, we sit down 1:1 for 15-30 minutes to work on skills.  Typically, for English Language Arts, one day, we use picture books and phonics materials and, the next, we use a portable phonics book and personal response journal.  So, the
Ultimate Phonics Reading Program proved easy to slip into our existing approach.

After my children read 2-3 familiar easy phonics or picture books to me, we used
the Ultimate Phonics Reading Program for 5-15 minutes.  Then, we read an unfamiliar picture book.  This approach worked with my children because it fit our existing pattern.  It also helped balance the no-frills (dry) work of the the Ultimate Phonics Reading Program with the high-interest picture books.

Because
the Ultimate Phonics Reading Program is so easy to navigate, we simply brought it up on my computer, set a timer, and started off wherever we had left off the session before.  The children then worked until the timer went off, listening to words read by the program or by me, reading those same words themselves, and reading sentences

Sometimes, when the timer went off, they wanted to continue and, sometimes, with my struggling reader in particular, we cut short out lessons before the timer went off because I saw fatigue setting in.  (She really needs SHORT lessons.  I appreciate, then, that this program allows us to progress at our own pace, doing as little or as much as we wish in a single sitting.)

I also sometimes used words from the program to help my oldest child.  When I noticed patterns in his personal spelling dictionary that indicated phonics help with specific sounds or patterns, I found that looking through the
Ultimate Phonics Reading Program allowed me to easily find other words to work on targeted skills.

Would we recommend the program?

I have found
the Ultimate Phonics Reading Program for my developing and struggling readers, as well as convenient for quick help "filling in holes" in targeted areas with my advanced reader.  Thus, I would recommend it to others who seek an effective no-nonsense phonics resource.

My struggling reader says:

It's okay.  I like that the guy reads to you.  I also like that there are arrow buttons t make it easy to control.  It is easy, which is fine.  I like doing part of my lessons with easy things.  I want to keep using it sometimes.  I think it could help other little kids.

The one thing I do not like about it is that if you were a beginner, it might be hard because it starts with a long list of words.  It does not show you much to help but the vowel.  If you know what the vowel sounds like, but not the consonants, you might not know the word.  I think they should build the program with less words at the beginning.  Maybe teach "a" and "i", then "at" and "it" and move from there.  Starting small is good.

My developing reader said, "I don't like it.  It's boring," when I asked him about the program, but his sister immediately popped up and commented, "I think he's just in a bad mood."  I saw him silbing and reading with it.  I agree with her.  My son then conceded, "I was able to read things with it."  I concur.

Since beginning to use
the Ultimate Phonics Reading Program I have seen some progress in my children.  They are reading their phonics and picture books with greater confidence and accuracy!

The
Ultimate Phonics Reading Program is easy to add to lesson time, progresses systematically, and offers

Enjoy Celebrating an Angels Feast Day with Faith through Food and Fun

I just realized that I never shared here about all the fun we had last year celebrating the
Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael the Archangels and the
Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels.  So, I thought I would do so now in case anyone could use a little inspiration for living the liturgical year this coming week.

{Disclosure: Some links which follow are affiliate ones.  If you click through them and make any purchase, we may receive small income at no extra cost to you. Anything we make goes straight back into training happy hearts and sharing about it here with you.}
Prayer, Chat and Storytime

http://amzn.to/2dbtC8u

We opened our gathering with a Prayer to St. Michael and the Guardian Angel prayer.  Then, we chatted about what the children already knew about angels and what questions they might have.

We also read excerpts from the Catholic Children's Treasure Box (a favorite series of books which includes sweet readings about angels, including the kids' favorite - Wupsy, a guardian angel), the Story Library of Saints (which is an out-of-print collection of saint stories that includes one on St. Michael) and the Picture Book of Saints (a classic which sells used for only a penny.)

(Because I was so busy leading this period of our gathering and the other moms were setting up elsewhere, I have no pictures of this portion of our festivities.)

Feast Time

After our introductory prayer, chat and storytime, we gathered at a feast table, which was set simply with statues of angels, a guardian angel candle, some white candles, a yellow candle (since orange and gold are traditional colors associated with St. Michael), and, of course - treats!

Among the treats were:

  • popcorn (because we were going to watch a movie, but also because the white reminds us of the heavens)
  • angel-shaped cookies
  • hot apple sauce in a crock pot (because Michaelmas falls around apple picking time and so apples became traditional at this time of year)
  • apple juice ( because cider is also traditional to this feast day in some areas)

Movie Time

After a prayer of thanksgiving for our food and our gathering, the children dug into the treats and we headed outside for a large-screen viewing of My Secret Friend: A Guardian Angel Story, a sweet little movie that elicited quite a few giggles from the kids.

Craft Time

When the movie ended, we went back inside and enjoyed craft time.

First, we made two-sided beaded bookmarks.

To make them, the children selected pictures of St. Michael and other angels that I had printed out along with the text boxes of the St. Michael Prayer and the Guardian Angel prayer printed in different fonts.  They cut these out and affixed them to both sides of a bookmark sized piece of cardstock, which they, then, decorated with markers.

Once the children were happy with their decorated bookmarks, we laminated them and, then punched holes at the top.

Using ribbon and seven pony beads, we then strung beads "sacrifice bead style" so the children could pull a bead each day of the week they remembered to pray their angel prayers.

The children so enjoyed making these bookmarks, and, our family was happy to use them to pray and to decorate our St. Michael Name Day breakfast table.

Some of the children and moms made angel art, too.

For this art, we used mini canvases, wooden angel cut outs, glitter, paint, markers, coloring pencils, glue, etc.

The artwork came out beautifully!

In fact, the entire gathering was beautiful.  With faith, food, fun, and friends, we so enjoyed celebrating the angels.

More Ideas

Our
Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael the Archangels and the Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels celebration was such a fun, faith-filled time that I had hoped to make it an annual event.  But, alas, this year, it just cannot happen.  We have such a full family schedule this week, that we'll be celebrating the feast days in simpler quieter ways this year likely using ideas I gathered and shared for our Planning St. Michael’s Feast Day Tea: A Resource Round-Up, enjoying playing games with our St. Michael's Symbols 3-Part Cards (which you can grab for free!), and tossing the evil our of the heavens like St. Michael, as has become a tradition for our family.

Other Liturgical Year Fun This Week

If you'd like ideas for some of the other feast days coming up this week, please enjoy flashing back to these posts:
St. Jerome's Feast Day on September 30

St Theresa's Feast Day on October 1

One day, I will get around to sharing more about the fabulous St. Theresa day celebrations we enjoyed with friends for two years running, but now now.  It's back to weekly planning for me.
May you enjoy each of the special feast days and memorials that are coming up.

I'd also love to hear how you celebrate.

Saints Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Jerome, and Theresa, pray for us.

Ensure Your Children Use Email Safely

When I was offered a chance to review an Annual Subscription
to
KidsEmail.org, I knew right away that taking the opportunity would give me a way to mentor my son in responsible email use.

My oldest is at an age when he wants to be online more and more and, also, when he wants to do much of what he is interested in by himself.  I, however, have lived too long and experienced too much to allow him 100% free reign at his impressionable age.   For while there some things in life that I am willing to let my children just go for when they when they want to as they want to, learning from whatever unfolds along the way, there are other things that I am more comfortable mentoring them in in order to make sure they can do them safely and well before giving them total independence.  Online communications is one of those things.

KidsEmail.org Annual Subscription

In this day and age, of course, online prowess can be a positive thing.  Being able to research, communicate, and, sometimes just chill online can be a blessing.  However, it can also present trials and even danger.  Computers are tools which can be used for good or for bad.  My goal is to see them used only for good in my home. Ensuring my son learns how to use email smartly and safely, then, is important to me. A
Subscription to KidsEmail.org offers me an easy way to make that learning happen.

What is KidsEmail.org?

KidsEmail.org is a family-friendly email client that allows up to six children or teens in your family to have their own kids-safe email address which can be accessed on any device, free from ads and spam.  It also offers settings that allow parents to limit who can contact their child via email, choose whether or not links and images can be shared, and more  In fact, there are easy-to-use settings on the parent page, which include:

  • Mail Monitoring - Parents can choose to be copied on all incoming emails, outgoing emails, or both.  (While I am all for privacy in communication for children and adults, I did choose this option for now just so I can easily glance at what's happening in my son's communication.  I let him know I did and also let him know I will eventually turn this setting off.)

  • Time Restrictions- This feature allows parents to set a limit on the amount of time a child is allowed to spend on email. Parents can also set up "grounding" by shutting down access for a set amount of time.  (We have not used either of these features since we share a computer so I know when my son can be online.  I imagine I will use it if we get handheld devices or more computers, though, and think it is a worthwhile feature.)
  • Contact Manager - This feature allows parents an option to choose who can communicate with a child via email.  (This is one of my favorite features.  I  will more comfortably turn off the mail monitoring features over time with this option to approve or disallow specific contacts.)
  • Offensive Word Filter – With this feature, parents can select any words children are not allowed to use when sending a message.
  • GPS - This feature allows parents to track a child’s location when they are using the mobile application.  (My children have no mobile devices and I do not love GPS tracking, but I can see how the feature could offer safety.)

All settings can easily be modified with single click. Parents can also view activity logs for individual children and for the entire family.

Our ExperienceSetting up accounts for children at KidsEmail.org proved easy. I simply logged in and accessed a dashboard where I could set up my son's account and select which restrictions to place it.  I could also decide if I wanted the account to  have a child-friendly look and feel and an email address ending in @kidsemail.org or if I'd like my son to use a login page with a more grown up look and feel and and an address ending in @kmail.org.

KidsEmail.org Annual Subscription

I don't like to rush growing up, so I chose the former, and, then, let my son have at his new email address.

With me by my son's side, I showed him his log-in page, which he used within seconds.  Then, he chose his own background image.  His is not into princesses:

KidsEmail.org Annual Subscription

Nor is he into monkeys:

KidsEmail.org Annual Subscription

So, he chose this one:

After that, he got right to sending his first KidsEmail to Daddy using the simple  and easy-to-maneuver dashboard which consists of:
  • an inbox, which shows up as soon as a child logs in
  • an option to write an email
  • a folders option for organization of the inbox and sent emails
  • a contacts list
  • and settings options that allows a child to change the background image.

Once my son had sent an email to Daddy, he sent ones to me and to a few friends.  Then, I let him know that he is free to use his new email responsibly whenever he has online time.  I have his account set to allow me to receive copies of incoming emails and to approve  contacts that he can communicate through email with.  So long as things go smoothly, we can talk about changing setting later.

Of course, my son did not love the idea of Mommy being able to read his incoming mail and to utilize other settings to help ensure his safety online.  However, he understands that I simply want to keep watch over things while he is an email fledgling, and, in time, will happily let him fly with less oversight.
  I appreciate that our
Subscription to KidsEmail.org makes doing just that easy.  It is so easy for me to turn features on and off that I can be ultra-careful now, then, ease off, offering my son more free reign, then tighten controls a but more if need be, then back off again.

It is also delightful to get random messages of love from my boy (however hard-on-the-eyes some of those messages might be as he plays with highlighting and whatnot):

Short notes of apology are sweet, too (and prove he needs spelling. typing help):

And, okay, I admit, a happy tear escape my eye when I noticed my son changed his background image the other day to this one:

Quiet testimonies to his love for God and desire to pray move me.  I never expected that trying out a kid-safe email client would also offer an opportunity to (visually) choose faith.

Our Thoughts

When I was siting down to write this review, I asked my son what he thought about his new KidsEmail.  He said:

I like that you can draw, but I wish there was an eraser.  I also like that you can choose different backgrounds.  I wish it had more caricatures (emoticons).  I wish there were more settings you could change, too, like how the letter looks, or a border, ... I want more things to play around with.  But, it's good, because Mom lets me use email more now . She says this is safe. Is it really safer than other emails?

Oh, that child!  As you can see, in true ten-year-old-boy form, he is all about the "I want more..." and thinks he will be okay without Mom "babying" him with "safe emails".  That said, he has been happily testing out all the fun features on his KidsEmail account and wanting more and more of them.  At least once a day lately, he grins and asks me if I've checked my email account for he has been enjoying his newly granted privilege of using email more and more.

KidsEmail.org Annual Subscription

As for me, I find that
KidsEmail.org is easy-peasy for both child and parent to use and is safer than other email options for for children and teens.  I am well pleased with our Subscription and encourage others with young email fledglings to give KidsEmail.org a try.
